“More than ever, we stand before the challenge to make our contribution to building a multicultural nation, in a society with plural vision, democratic and inclusive, where equity, non violence and respect build our identity with profound knowledge of our environment, thus, we work in different scopes to make this positioning possible as a national and international calling to acknowledge the importance and transcendence that traditional games and sports have and how they contribute cultural, social, and educationally to our life.”

ABOUT US

Mexican Traditional Games and Sports Federation was born in 1988 as an initiative that became a formal organization in 1997, it was conceived for safeguarding and acknowledging diversity in all ludic expression shapes and forms, it involves the participation of sport and indigenous leaders, civil society and governmental institutions.

As a sport federation, we collaborate with Mexican government as part of the National Sport System, and we are recognized and endorsed by CONADE (National Sport and Physical Culture Commission) and CODEME (Mexican Sports Confederation).

In 2002 we obtained the National Sports Award, the biggest sport recognition in Mexico.

As an institution we work so traditional games and sports are acknowledgde as cultural heritage in our country (as it is stipulated in the “New sport and physical culture general law (2013), Art. 88 and the Sports promotion and incentive law and the sport and physical culture program).

32 years after its creation, FMJDAT represents the voice of 22 TSG state associations and involves the work of many different social actors: groups and organizations of players, sport trainers, volunteers, promoters, researchers, universities, the involvement of cultural, sport and legislative public institutions and similar international groups and organizations.

We have catalogued around 200 different practices, and for their understanding, we have classified them in three main branches or categories: Games, Sports and Mental Skill Games, and added some special categories that we consider important: ball games, season games, hunting or war related practices, and ritual activities.

We carry out a wide variety of activities to promote and safeguard traditional games and sports: festivals, encounters, championships, tournaments, training, exhibitions, conferences, academic forums, certifications, TSG learning workshops, traditional implements and equipment manufacture workshops, media and promotion content, research, editorial publications, public policies conduct and networking with similar organizations around the globe.

Among our most successful activities is the National Traditional Games and Sports Encounter with 21 years of history. In 2018, its 21st edition, around 500 players and athletes of different games and sports from different parts of the nation gathered in this festival sharing 150 activities including workshops, exhibitions and conferences.

FMJDAT´s permanent work has managed to increase the experience and value of this national and international legacy, its importance has been recognized by the global village and acknowledge by international entities such as UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) which recommends all world governments to: “support a preservation policy and value traditional games and sports as part of cultural heritages in regions and countries”
